Infections of the urinary tract (IVU) is the second most common type of infection in the body.
The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureter, bladder and urethra.
The key elements are that the kidneys remove excess fluid and waste from the blood to form urine, keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood, and produce a hormone that helps the formation of red blood cells. The narrow tube that leads from the kidney to the bladder urine is called the ureter. The urine is stored in the bladder and emptied through the urethra.
Every part of the urinary system can become infected. As a rule, the more the infection is localized in the upper reaches, the more serious. Infections of the urinary tract are classified, from the mild to the most serious, in:
Urethritis: infection / inflammation of uretra caused not only by micro-organisms and bacteria usually involved in IVU, some sexually transmitted diseases
Cystitis: inflammation of the bladder, is the most common form of IUV, which may worsen if the bladder is not completely clear with diuresis

Pyelonephritis: kidney infection, caused by an infection or if the higher reflux in uretere is likely to infect the reflux of urine to the kidney.
The urinary tract infection may be:
Simple infections affecting the urinary tract healthy and not spread to other parts of the body
Complicated: Infections caused by anatomical abnormalities that spread to other parts of the body or are resistant to antibiotics.
Under normal circumstances, urine is sterile, devoid of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Infection is usually due to entry of a microorganism, a bacterium often from the digestive tract joins opening of uretra and multiplied. In many cases, the bacteria make their first in uretra, giving rise uretrite. If the bacteria go back to the bladder causing cystitis that if not treated properly, can extend up uretere kidney.
Most infections are caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli), which normally lives in the colon.

The IVU can also affect children.
Not all those who suffer from IVU develop recognizable symptoms, but at least one of the following occurs:
strong and persistent need to urinate
burning during the diuresis
diuresis frequently and in small quantities
blood in urine or dark color and strong odor
Each type of IVU is characterized by specific symptoms, depending on the region of the urinary tract affected.
Urinary tract infection, lower:
dysuria (pain or burning during diuresis)
frequency (the need to urinate frequently)
urgency (sensation of inability to hold urine)
hesitation (feeling of inability to urinate easily or completely)
dark urine, odor, or blood in urine
lower stomach pain
slight fever (less than 38 ° C), chills, and feeling sick
Infection of the upper urinary tract:
fairly high fever (over 38 ° C)
severe chills
nausea
Side pain (back or side) from vomiting
In newborns, infants, children and old classic symptoms of a urinary infection can not be present. Other symptoms may indicate an IVU:
Infants: fever or hypothermia, poor appetite, jaundice
Infants: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, poor appetite, weakness
Children: irritability, poor appetite, persistent fever, loss of bowel control, change in frequency of diuresis
Seniors: fever or hypothermia, poor appetite, lethargy, mental confusion.
